They see rest; you experience a forced stillness that feels like drowning in open air.

The cost of living this way is measured in grief and isolation. You lose the thread of your own narrative—who you were before the virus, the momentum of your ambitions, the simple trust that your body will show up for you. Relationships strain under the weight of invisible limits. You begin to gaslight yourself, wondering if you are somehow choosing this heaviness, if the medical tests came back normal because the defect is in your character rather than your cells. Shame becomes a secondary infection, colonizing the spaces where energy used to live.

Why This Happens

The seeds of post viral fatigue often germinate in childhood, particularly if you grew up in an environment where safety was conditional or unpredictable. Children who develop insecure attachment patterns—whose caregivers were inconsistent, emotionally unavailable, or unable to co-regulate distress—often develop nervous systems primed for hypervigilance. Soft, warm food signals safety to the ventral vagal complex that regulates your gut. The chewing requirement slows you down, preventing the sympathetic activation that comes from rushing.
