Trauma Release Exercises (TRE) are a series of physical movements that activate the body's natural reflex mechanism for releasing muscular tension and stress. Developed by Dr. David Berceli, TRE induces neurogenic tremoring — involuntary vibrations that help discharge trapped survival energy from the body.
TRE works with the premise that the body has an innate capacity to self-regulate and release stress, but this process can become blocked after trauma or chronic stress.
What This Means
When the body experiences trauma, it mobilizes for survival — muscles tense, the nervous system activates, and energy is prepared for fight or flight. When that energy isn't discharged through action, it remains trapped in the muscular system.
TRE uses specific exercises to fatigue the leg muscles, then positions the body to trigger neurogenic tremoring. These involuntary tremors are the body's natural mechanism for releasing deep muscular holding patterns.
The tremoring activates the parasympathetic nervous system, helping shift the body from chronic activation into a state of rest and recovery. It can feel unusual at first, but it's a normal physiological response.
Why This Happens
The body stores trauma in predictable patterns — the psoas muscle (connected to fight/flight), the shoulders (bracing), and the diaphragm (breathing restriction). These muscles become chronically contracted.
Neurogenic tremoring is a natural process that occurs in animals after surviving life-threatening situations. Humans, with our complex cortexes and social conditioning, often suppress this natural release mechanism.
TRE provides a safe, controlled way to activate this mechanism. The exercises fatigue the muscles enough to trigger the tremoring response without overwhelming the nervous system.
