Short Answer
AI can provide ethical supplemental mental health support—within strict boundaries. It's ethical when positioned as a tool, not treatment; when users understand its limits; when it doesn't replace human care; and when it's transparent about being artificial. It becomes unethical when it masquerades as therapy, exploits vulnerable people, or captures users who need human care.
What This Means
Ethical AI support: crisis resources when human help isn't available, CBT skill drills, psychoeducation, journaling prompts, and symptom tracking between sessions. Unethical: calling itself therapy, diagnosing, promising outcomes, replacing human connection, or keeping people in crisis from emergency services. The distinction is consent and clarity about what you're getting.
Why This Happens
Mental health access is catastrophically limited. AI offers something available, consistent, and affordable. The danger: companies may overpromise, users may under-refer, and people in crisis may be falsely reassured by non-human responses. The ethics depend on implementation.

When to Seek Support
