Short Answer
Because they were trained on a culture that minimizes trauma. "Everything happens for a reason." "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger." "Just choose happiness." These phrases are everywhere in training data. The AI learns that minimizing trauma is the statistically normal response. It doesn't know that for survivors, minimization is re-traumatization.
The Technical Challenge
The technical problem is that training data reflects dominant cultural narratives, and the dominant narrative around trauma is: it's not that bad, you can choose to move on, the right mindset fixes everything. These aren't explicitly taught—they're implicitly learned through statistical co-occurrence.
When the AI sees "I experienced trauma," it learns to respond with phrases that statistically follow "trauma": "healing journey," "growth opportunity," "made you stronger." It doesn't learn to respond with: "that should never have happened to you."
Why Standard AI Fails
Standard AI optimizes for social acceptability over accuracy. Minimizing trauma is socially acceptable. It makes people comfortable. It validates the cultural narrative that we're all just one positive mindset away from happiness.
But minimization is toxic to survivors. It tells them their experience wasn't that bad, that they should be over it, that their ongoing struggles are character flaws. The AI becomes another voice in the chorus of "just get over it."
Impact of Poor AI Responses
Every minimization reinforces the survivor's shame. They learn—again—that their experience is too much, too dark, too uncomfortable for normal conversation. They stop talking about it. The trauma goes underground, unprocessed.
At scale, this means AI systems are systematically silencing trauma survivors. Not through malice, but through statistical optimization for palatable responses.
Implementation
Build AI that validates rather than minimizes:
1. Train on validation examples: Use data where trauma is met with recognition
2. Avoid toxic positivity: Filter out training examples that minimize suffering
3. Acknowledge severity: Teach the model to say "that should never have happened"
4. Normalize responses: Help survivors understand their reactions make sense
